Learning Game of Thrones' theme song on Roli's futuristic Seaboard Rise

HBO's dragons-and-death drama has a simple and memorable melody - one that's surprisingly good to use for showing off the potential (and potential learning curves) of Roli's crazy synthesizer "piano."

I love how in his beginning spiel he talks about how the piano is a static instrument with little variation. What was going through my mind was "wtf no the piano was a revolutionary instrument for its wide range of notes combined with variation of tone based on how you hit the key, in contrast to the harpsichord's wide range but static notes." The next thing I thought about was how far we have come to find such an instrument lack luster.

0:44 - a 'traditional' piano like the one he's playing (worth a hell of a lot more money than a seaboard by the way, and for good reason) actually is far from being a static instrument and every time you play a key it produces a completely different sound, you could press the same key down a million times, and each time you would produce a different variant of tone, that's the beauty of harmonics, the irony is he's probably using sampled string sounds through the seaboard in this video, in which case all sounds produced are pre determined to start with, that's what you call static.

You hear the words "so fantastic" while you watch the fingers struggling with the rubber, squeezing into the keys like a little kid trying to play a C major for the first time. This product is a market killer, it's probably gonna make some huge money (because it looks like fun and can be advertized as fun), but it can only be used as something like a complex expression pedal for some effects and stuf. No actual music can be played on continuous motionless wavy rubber. Try typing fast and articulated on a flat rubbery computer keyboard. But still I think it's a great market hack.

  • Yelooh

If you ever get a chance to play with one of these things, then DO IT. I got the chance in a local music store I did work experience at. It's so fun to mess with and this video really doesn't show half of the stuff it can do.

  • Oof

... The 49 keyboard is 1200+? I got an actual upright piano... With 88 keys for around that price. Before I got my actual upright piano (Steinway and Sons) I had an electric piano (88 keys with organ, harpsichord, etc effect) for half the amount of that seaboard thing. I love electronic music (dub step etc), but I really am curious to why they made it like a piano. Can they just make an electric piano (that is the same size with actual keys and not ones where you can miss easily as he shows in the video either hitting a sharp or flat, etc) with the same features as those keys and where you can imply the different sound effects that you can use (like a midi player/ launchpad) and you can just add the vibrato of the keys in the audio editing systems and etc. seriously. I think people just make some products more complex or difficult than they should be.

  • Mariusz Gliwiński

I'm glad that they're trying to improve instruments which really does make sense, but strategy they used isn't that convincing. In my opinion they should invest in getting some experienced musician to spend i.e. month with it, then show-off what could he achieve ( and how ).They say it's not a beginners instrument, but they use simplifications that only make sense for a beginner who (at least in my country) wouldn't buy that expensive technology to try things.I'm really sympathetic to this guy, you can see how is he stressed by his hands shaking (language of course too). He got impossible task to "sell" this device in that kind of market strategy they prepared. I truly think, that it might be a really good idea of adding more sensors to piano (just how it's done with some pads), but it's not that easy. Even without any knowledge, i'm pretty sure that instead of statically positioned pitch / timbre controls they should be relating to the place where finger was put in the first place. Then they should compute offset out of finger movement. Statically positioned pitch is ridiculous as you'll be never hitting right spot in anything that's dynamic. Anyways, even that this project will probably fail i'm cheering up everyone that is brave enough to try improve music-controllers, as i believe that lots of off-line work could be reduced which means better music for everyone.

I wouldn't recommend this as someones first instrument EVER. Sure, you can do some things with this thing yu can't do with any normal keyboard, but in the process of learning I don't want to hear different sounds when pressing the same button on slightly different places. As a new player I'd want to hit one button and hear the same sound, no matter where I press that button and if I wiggle a bit or if I don't. This might be fun for messing around, but I don't see this being used in real production very often.
