This is Elon Musk’s key to Tesla’s future

Elon Musk's Gigafactory is arguably the most important thing that Tesla makes. The 1.9 million-square-foot factory in Sparks, Nevada, is only 30 percent complete, but it’s already on track to make 60 percent of the world’s lithium ion batteries - and Tesla plans to build more Gigafactories around the world. The Verge took a look inside.

@Arcanum I knew electric cars were going to be the future when RC airplanes and helicopters began to go Electric. I no longer fly any gas models because they're loud, harder to maintain, messy, and require more tuning. I'm one hundred percent electric now and it's getting harder and harder to find gas models at my flying field

What makes these cars absolutely amazing, these other auto makers that have been around for years had year after year to improve their vehicles model. When Tesla put out their very first car to sell to the public, it's like they have already have had that 20 30 40 years of those improvements that the other car makers have had. Of course, I sure it's not perfect but for being a new car company, they can make an advance car that seems like they been around for 40 years.

@Benny Ceca Quite possibly true, but I don't think the large carmakers will get to the level of integration software-wise. They have always had a third party for almost every component. That lack of integration will be their downfall. In an EV, there isn't much hardware aside from the frame, batteries. It is mainly software.

Questions: Does the Gigafactory currently have free space or has it reached its full capacity on floor space? So we see it has solar panels being placed on the roof. Can anyone comment on the amount of energy the solar panels will provide in the future towards building batteries. The reason for this question is: the argument that making car batteries uses fossil fuels from the grid, As the Gigafactory moves more towards its own solar energy so it reduces its reliance on grid energy - any percentage figures available on the solar energy usage vs grid usage?

"We can declare victory when every single car on the road is a Tesla." ....But, Musk is saying he welcomes others (competition) coming in to adopt his open source tech for an end goal of making day to day life sustainable and better. I agree with Musk's consideration of long term, altruistic perspectives. But, have to wonder how many loose ends with personalities and philosophies will make everything harder as a company grows.

You know what, I think Elon is the coolest, crazy, smart guy I've ever heard of. I like how he is real and doesn't try to convince people that something is not what it really is. He admits his wrongs, mistakes, and bad ideas. And is not afraid to admit yeah I effed up on that. And with that mindset and personality alone, Musk will go far. Change the world forever and make great things happen. Hopefully soon I will be a proud Model X owner...I cant wait!!!

I am starting to change my mind about the market of EVs. I always assume it would just be a tiny niche in the total car market and would not really start to grow until about mid century but with so many large auto companies investing billions, they are doing so because of their belief that it EVs will start taking off in the early to mid 20's. That is something I would like to see

My dad recently bought a new model s and it's fantastic, the only thing I hate about it when I've used it is that the charge time is still a little bit to long though that's something I know will be improved on in the coming years. One thing that I feel they should look into though (if they aren't already) is cars with hydrogen file cells are to my understanding they are incredibly efficient, and would become even more so if the electricity made in hydrogen fuel cell was used to separate hydrogen from its paired elements. But that just like the technology tesla uses now is far from being perfected.

The batteries are what gives Tesla it value. Even if the cars fail, the batteries will keep them in business. The solar business would succeed better if they could actually get their product to market without inflating the price. So far you physically can't get the roof.

The Semi's and Next Gen Roadsters will be comparatively low volume products so the amount of space required to manufacture them will not be so huge. As I understand it, the Semi will be using Model 3 electric motor modules and bigger/more Model 3 battery packs so it might make more sense to ship those powertrain components elsewhere and bring the volume Model 3 production in house to the GigaFactory to cut down on shipping costs/time. The Model Y will be a different story and will probably outpace the Model 3 IF the current trend towards compact SUV/CUV's continue to change the industry. However, Model 3 sales will probably also taper off when the Model Y becomes available, again if industry trends continue unabated.

It's interesting - soon there won't be a need for large parts of the shipping if this becomes a standard everywhere. It could potentially change global trade forever because instead of building and producing in cheap regions, the factories will be established where the final product should be sold, creating work where the product is being sold and not just where it's being built.

Questions about Gigafactory products: What is the inbound maximum DC voltage that can come from an off-grid solar array into a Tesla PowerPack? 480 volts DC? What is the maximum output ac voltage from the smallest Tesla offgrid solar array powered PowerPack and inverter system? Can you get 3 phase 480 AC voltage out of the Tesla PowerPack inverter? What is the size of the smallest off-grid Tesla PowerPack system? 100 mwh? 200 mwh? What is the recommended size of a solar array to power an off-grid 200 mwh Tesla PowerPack system? About how much is a 100 mwh battery pack worth (like the ones used in the models S and X)? How does that compare to the cost of a Tesla 100 mwh PowerPack?

Are there plans to produce public transportation bus? Or did Tesla concede defeat to BYD? Apple was not the first company to produce a smartphone, but when they introduced the I PHONE, it became the standard that other companies are compared to. In the same way, many companies introduced electric buses, but if Tesla produces their version, then people will not remember that Tesla was not the first company that produced electric powered public buses.

So he will replace as much of them as possible with robots. What do you think about this idea?

Its really not considering other job offers and location. If they manage to keep the pay the same if they move EVERYTHING to Reno then sure. it'll be good however there is a housing shortage already because of a large increase of migration into the area because of Silicon Valley companies moving towards the area. I'm leaving as soon as I can for Houston or somewhere else where my pay as a mechanical engineer would be much higher starting than if I were to stay and work for Tesla. If any of you haven’t seen a building like this it’s something to behold. The gigafactory is going to be massive but if you truly want to be impressed visit Boeing’s headquarters and stand at the base of the doors big enough for 747s to roll through. It’s an experience. Boeing’s factory is so large and roomy inside that it has its own weather. Clouds literally form inside. When the gigafactory is done it may have more square footage but it will still be nowhere as impressive as Boeing because you can’t really appreciate the whole building at once because it’s all sectioned off and it’s not very tall.

As far as I know they're not. The goal is to produce Lithium batteries cheaply.

What I do like about Elon Musk is he likes to learn the hard way. Instead of having experts developed by others he likes to try & fail so the knowledge is Tesla\SpaceX centric. Only thing I worry with his companies is they don't take logistics seriously. Huge factories need huge pipelines and become susceptible to bottlenecks real quick. Of course maybe that is the Boring Company & SpaceX role for the future...

@oregonnich Do you know how many subsidies oil gets? They get way more subsidies than EVs, if they stopped subidising oil as much EVs would be way more in demand.

@Hey hoe I am not talking about internal logistics but external logistics. Every large scale industrial project I have worked on has always had multiple, easily accessible transport connections. Relying on a truck based delivery pipeline from a relatively remote geographic location seems risky & in-efficient to me. Relying on existing Tesla owners to deliver cars to new customers highlights that they still have a lot to learn. But, as has been demonstrated time & again, Elon is a fast learner. And, of course, if he can get his Electric Truck happening his pipeline suddenly becomes much more efficient and vertically integrated.

Well, any highly concentrated factory is about reducing logistic losses.

It helps if you have taxpayer dollars, subsidies and loans from the government too. Average joe footing the bill so they can get more crony capitalist tax incentives.

4:54 be aware that is not the philosophy of Tesla and especially not Elon. He is a believer in competition, they want every car to be electric and innovative, that doesn't mean it has to be a Tesla.

The question is if there is a saturation margin for Tesla cars in the marketplace. So far they are taking away customers from Toyota Prius (people who already switched, willing to pay more/give up something for the electric dream) and some from small luxury segments like BMW 3 series. Can they convince people who would buy popular cars otherwise to switch to Tesla? (Honda Accord, Civic, Toyota Corolla, Dodge Charger, Jeeps, ... etc.? )

We need a Gigafactory here in Florida. There are a ton of Teslas on the road here these days.

  • Gam3Junkie7

Well, they don't even have a Gigafactory there, *yet*, but I think Tesla can already declare victory on the vehicle front in Europe, I looked it up, there are WAY more electric cars there, especially Tesla models, than anywhere else right now.

One thing that I liked most is that its free of any sort of pollution.

  • Joël

    2 ปีที่แล้ว

Not at all, electric cars are extremely polluting. The manufacturing process (especially the batteries), from the lithium mines to the construction is pretty bad for the environment. You have to use an electric car for at least 20 years for it to outbalance the pollution created by standard fuel cars. Photovoltaic technology (aka solar pannels) have the same issue. However, the public always think electricity = super green, but it really depends...

Have to make a quick correction to the narration at 2:30: The Drive Unit is not made of the Battery Pack. The Drive unit is made of the gear box, rotor sub-assembly, stator sub-assembly, and the inverter. All these sub-assemblies are combined and sealed into a thing called the "Drive Unit"- a motor, basically. It turns the battery pack's potential energy into kinetic energy. The battery pack is not part of the drive unit. It is its own thing. The two work together, but they are two entirely different lines in the factory.

@Wyvvern Stone Humboldt has nothing to do with cars as far as I'm aware. From what I can gather off the internet, he was a biologist that I've never heard of. That said, Leonardo Da Vinci is almost DEFINITELY the greatest inventor of all time. Invented the plane and the car hundreds of years ahead of time.
