How the James Webb Space Telescope will revolutionize astrophysics

วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope was successfully launched on December 25th. This is the revolutionary successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. The spacecraft still has a long way to go in space, but if all goes well, the vehicle could transform our view of the Universe.

If this telescope detects another civilization, should we try to make contact or should we keep quiet?

I'll tell you exactly what's going to happen as God has revieled it except the world is sleeping because it rejects God, in the next year or so God is going to remove the children and all those who repented and turned from sin to Jesus. Then Satan will indwel in Barack Obama and he will do lying sighns and wonders and will set up the mark of the Beast anti-Christ system. As crazy as this sounds it's real and you 2 can find out for your self because if you repent and turn from sin at home to Jesus he will answer you and you will not be deceived anymore about your reality:)

If NASA discovers another civilization, it would be too risky to make contact right away. We would not know of they are hostile or not. Additionally, if this civilization thought themselves to be alone, we may also be perceived as hostile. The best course of action would be to remain as quiet observers until we gather more information about them and improve our space technology. NASA would also be more inclined to keep this a secret until more evidence is gathered. This would be to keep global interests ahead of any countries potentially wishing to profit or politically benefit from communications outside of earth. If communication by NASA is successful, this line would have to be well established and documented before it is eventually made public. This would keep bullhorn conspiracy theorists on the internet at bay before they discredit information based on their association alone. Disinformation is a real problem in our modern society.

If so,We'll only see a civilisation that's million years older than our present day. There might not even be a civilisation there right now. (The James Webb observe the past.) Even if we try to to communicate it'll take another plenty of years for it to reach them. And if they care to send us a reply back. It'll probably take the same amount of time. So, when it reaches us , the earth would probably be eaten by our sun .

@Biniam Gaming unfortunately moving about in orbit isn’t as simple as on earth, yes starship can go 400 million to Mars but that’s with the help of gravity and a lot of other astronomical effects. The L2 point is closer but because of the way it works it’s much more difficult to get to. Also the JWST will take about 2 weeks to get there so for astronomers it would be closer to a 5 week journey radiation wise

  • Biniam Gaming

    Biniam Gaming

    22 วันที่ผ่านมา

@CMDR Why not? Starship can get to Mars (400 million miles away) but can't get to 1 million miles away? Radiation isn't a problem either since they're only staying for a few hours

"We didn't even know exoplanets existed before the 1990s" Im almost certain that we assumed our star wasn't the only star out of the ~100 billion we can see in the sky that has planets orbiting around it. Heard of Star Trek? We proved it to be true in the 90s.

It is not in orbit, but at Lagrange point (where gravity of Earth and sun are equivalent, so it can stay there) about million miles away. There is no man made space-junk there and odds of a random rock hitting it are extremely low. (Estimated at about 0,01% every 10 years)

It’s not just NASA, albeit it is the most significant contributor, but it’s an international project…for example it’s an ESA Ariane 5 rocket which launched JWST, from French Guyana, not an American one

@Big WhiteDwarf STILL no answer to the direct question. What will the JWT do that will help mankind in all its massive problems of today? And I'm here because people see the technology of what this entails and are mesmerized. In doing so they turn a blind-eye to the costs, including maintaining a data center to categorize all the "pretty pictures." What is it going to do besides that? WHAT??? Newton and Einstein and the spending on the military, and the first satellites and the internet have NOTHING to do with this project. Answer the question. Okay I will........it will do nothing that we can use to help the Earth today. It will send pretty pictures and generate conjecture as to "what's out there" so we have an exciting story to tell our 8th graders. Jez................

@James Bliehall when u used to eat 5 hamburger to get full, then u ask urself this question that why i eat the first four burgers? why dont i just eat the fifth, then i will be full. quick and easy. non sense, right? exactly like ur own question. what answers do u expect ? it just tells a lot abt u when u mentioned any discoveries that will come from james webb telescope are just exciting pretty pictures. it'd just amaze me that u don't know the answers of ur own question. otherwise, why the hell r u in this tech oriented channel? when Newton discovered the gravity, ppl like u questioned, when Einstein discovered relativity , ppl like u questioned. it wont solve any immediate problems we have now. that's not what it is for. its for solving problems we will be facing later. and, the most importantly, ppl like u are the problem, always the problem. this is why we keep having problems. u r just here to create noises and wasting ppls time. end of comments. bye.

@Big WhiteDwarf As always, no definitive answer from the science crowd. I ask again: What will we gain from this that will help mankind solve all the issues we have here on Earth other than "exciting pretty pictures?" Simple question.

Dwarf, So be the first to step forward and answer the elementary level question. " How will mankind on Earth benefit from this $10 billion investment?" Okay pretty pictures of things we can never, ever reach. After that what?? For that matter how has the Hubble telescope (a fraction of the cost of this project) helped the people on this Earth?

The physics of seeing the origin of the universe is not possible without an actual time machine (or teleportation). You can't see the origins of the universe unless you are outside of the universe looking in. You won't see the past from within the event. They will get to see some really far away stars, but the info they gather will be of information looooooong after any sort of beginning. For instance if the star they examine is 1billion light years away, that is then 1 billion years old plus all the time in the universe that we didn't look at it for. I am super stoked for this, I just don't understand why anyone thinks we will be able to see stars from the beginning of time. Unless teleportation or actual time travel that can't happen. Maybe science even in regular terms is now beyond me idk

It can make more sense if you think about the light from distant stars like a posted letter. If someone in a distant galaxy posts a letter it will take billions of years for it to reach earth. By the time it gets here, the information in the letter will be billions of years old. We cannot know what the distant galaxy is like in the present because all the letters they send take so long to get here. We can know what it was like billions of years ago because of the delay. JWST is special because it can image light from these super duper distant stars and galaxies. That is how it can see back in time.
