MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max impressions

วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี

We’re all so excited about these new MacBook Pros because it feels like Apple finally listened and made the laptops we’ve all been asking for. We’ve had three of them for a little less than a week, so we’re just doing a quick preview today - we want to really take our time on this review and make sure we get it right. And we want to know what questions you have about the MacBook Pro, so leave a comment below.

@Haha I see what you're doing They don't see the same gains relative to Final Cut Pro and other first party apple software though. Yes they are native, it does not appear that they are (or maybe allowed via developer tools) to use some of the other IP blocks in the SoC. But yes, they are native, Rosetta 2 was so good that it isn't like performance doubled but the uplift is nice.

What I really want to know: what's the performance delta between the M1 pro and the max for 'normal' tasks. I'm a developer so coding, running servers, docker, 100 tabs is chrome.. I pre-ordered the pro with 32 GB ram because I assume the max only adds value if you do more graphical work . And if there is a benefit to the max, how much downside is there in terms of battery usage ?

  • Maarten Seghers

    Maarten Seghers

    2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Teagan Atwater It depends on how important the resolve workflow is. For a hobby it's probably ok, the pro is still no slouch. If you use it professionally time is money and you make back the investment quite fast.

I'm in the same boat! But I also edit GoPro footage with Resolve. I went with the low-end Max (24c) so that I could get 64GB ram... but I've been second-guessing myself and considering dropping to the 16c Pro with 32GB like you ordered (saving $600). No idea what the right call is

  • Maarten Seghers

    Maarten Seghers

@MP Lovecraft Thanks, the Anandtech chip review gave some good insights. it seems the performance gain will be negligible for my use case. I'm also affraid that once I go max I'll be tempted to go to the 64GB (fck those RAM prices btw) I took into account return policy because I might bring it back if the performance( per Watt) is not worth switching from linux. if not I can get a 5900HX with 32GB and a 4K OLED for half the price

  • MP Lovecraft

The Max has better multi core performance that possibly could benefit Docker and Chrome. It has double the memory bandwidth and I suspect it got a more robust cooling system on the 16 inch, otherwise I don't really see a benefit. If you change your mind for whatever reason you can always return it and get another setup.

It always seems like music production takes a back seat to photo/video in reviews. (I guess this is partly because THmy is a visual platform, so it skews things). I’d be particularly interested in how it handles large projects with a high plugin count. It’s hard to make a decision about RAM and chip on Apple silicon, given that we can’t compare directly with intel.

Even though the previous versions are 16 inches, they were comfortable enough to carry around somewhat comfortably, which I feel may not be the case for the new ones as they are slightly thicker than the previous versions (although I realize that the feel may be different when you actually hold the laptop as I’m assuming this based on what I see from the pictures and videos).

@Hiruy Gulilat Everybody makes their own decision on the balance of cost vs performance/quality but Final Cut Pro is a compelling argument for using macOS. Not only is it fast and efficient, it is a one off cost. It is a mistake to use Premiere Pro which is rentware and costs more than any difference in the cost of the hardware after only a few years. And I keep repeating myself but macOS comes with nearly all the software you need, out of the box. No need for MsOffice rentware or much of the other software you have to buy/rent to work on Windows. Linux has too many problems and restrictions which costs the user a lot of time just keeping it working. Free software is no reason to use Linux as any worthwhile free software is also available on macOS or Windows, where you also have a wide choice of paid Pro software. No need to buy the most expensive MacBook Pro. A middle of the range MacBook Pro M1 Pro combined with one or two large displays makes a perfectly good work set-up, and frees you up to work on the road as needed. Over the lifetime of the computer it pays you back in spades to buy quality up front, not second best with a lot more additional costs every year.

@Peter Breis Money is the most important specification, not the only one, but one of the most important ones. For most of us, we'd only spend a limited amount of money on the tools that's are specifically tailored to our needs. Of course, for people with no limit to what they can spend, their question can not be similar to us. I respect that. Btw I watched Dave 2D's review of the laptops, and I got my answer. These laptops are excellent at performance to power draw, seen by their long battery livs. But, they are too expensive, unless you always use the apps well tailored for them like Final Cut Pro.

Looking forward to the full review! For a design professional using graphic design software (PS, AI, ID), modelling and testing functionality in 3D using Fusion 360, as well as doing photography and video work using LR, and Final Cut and Premiere, my question is: IS the increase in power, efficiency, screen size and brightness, battery life etc (and the all important factor: cost), worth buying it *over* the already tried and tested 2020 M1 MBP pro? Sure the ports are back, but most of us now have acquired the necessary dongles. While I want to leave dongle-city behind, is everything that this new mac contains enough of a reason to not get the already great M1 MBP pro from 2020?

Having an M1 macbook air, I'm concerned that the M1 pro will only be a minor upgrade, and I'll need to buy the Max, which is a lot money (I wont say expensive because it outperforms computers 3 times its price). So I'd like to see performance comparisons between your three units. Render times are fun but more practical would be video exporting WHILE editing on a different 4K timeline, Also, 3D work with Blender! My 16 inch i9 totally choked on Blender. Practically unusable. Apple has recently become a huge patron to Blender so I have a feeling Blender is going to be much more relevant in the future. Obviously Apple thinks so too.

Great to see Nilay on camera. I know he’s running The Verge but he’s very engaging on screen. As far as the laptops, I mean the M1 is already plenty of power for me. I can’t get it to stutter and that’s editing multiple streams of 4K. I’m sure the M1 Pro and Max are out of this world.

Honestly, I wish they'd update the current 13" with a more modern screen. I know these new ones are absolute beast, but for me the portability and performance of the M1 on the 13" is all I need.

For work we use After Effects daily. Can you test the Beta version? Also, does converting the footage to ProRes before working on it speed things up compared to using straight out of camera Sony 4k .MXF files? We also use Cinema 4D, a Redshift rendering comparison to an iMac Pro would be handy. Plus how fast the Redshift preview window re renders. A test that no one seems to have is how fast Blackmagic Fusion is. Anything graphics intensive for VFX workflows will be great. Thanks

Definitely would like to know how much it takes to get the fans going on either machine, but particularly with the 32 core gpu. How cool does it stay? And secondly, based on the configs you have, is there any performance difference whatsoever between the M1 Pro in the 14 inch versus the 16 inch? Those are the key questions I personally have. (I would also like to know the performance of the 8core CPU, 14core GPU, versus the regular, non-binned M1 Pro; but I understand you guys did not receive that config and may not be able to comment on this).

Please include the base model M1 Pro in your reviews... It's got eight CPU cores (6 performance + 2 efficiency) vs 10 CPU cores (8 performance + 2 efficiency) on *all three* of the configurations you've shown in this video.

It may sound silly but I use Unreal Engine (overwhelmingly on Windows little bit on macOS for a variety of reason) BUT I am curious to see how Unreal Engine 5 performs on the M1 Max. So if The Verge can humor me and try UE5 and the sample project Valley Of The Ancients see how smoothly it runs. Testing mainly their Lumen system and Shader Compile time would be a good indicators. Wouldn’t be a legit test because there is no methodology outline here but still. EDIT: DISCLAIMER since UE5 isn’t in full release yet it may not be fair to Epic to test since it isn’t optimized yet.

Of course, your is the first review I watched. First impression: nice chonky! I’d like to actually see you test the 64GB vs 32GB MAX system to see if there is any trade-off in memory bandwidth. Next, I’d like to see what effect that Max “turbo” mode actually has on performance, noise and battery life. Then, I’d like to see some actual battery life tests to see if Apple has really pulled off another BIG WIN. Thanks!

Fan noise is extremely important for me as well - I don’t want my MacBook to spin up fans only because I hook up another monitor for document work and do facetime at the same time. Maybe you could give us sound samples compared to the 2019 16“ MBpro? Windows (arm) performance in Parallels is important for me, too. Great video so far - keep up the good work, thanks.

How does the machine run while hooked into an external display? On the 2019 Pros, they would run at peak temperatures with no fan activation when using an external display (either as a second monitor or with the Macbook closed as a primary). I'd love to know how these new processors handle the additional workflow, but also recognize that external displays are an entire ecosystem in their own right and may not be feasible to test.

Question: I’d like to know what the multiple monitor situation is with the Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C outputs. Macs have been weird with their lack of MST support. Thunderbolt 4 might change that. It would be awesome if you could try some of the more popular Thunderbolt 3 or 4 hubs to see how many monitors you can get going from a single connection. I need three in my setup and I’m trying to avoid plugging in multiple cables every time.

Thanks guys for not releasing your review at the earliest possible time (i.e. like you do with iPhone). If you release an impressions video first, we are all watching that. It doesn't need to be a full review. But when you do a full review right at the embargo lift, it may be a bit more difficult to go back and do a re-review a few weeks later. I'm sure you've considered all this and probably concluded that your opinion won't change much after three weeks versus three days for some products (again, maybe like iPhone), but I feel your opinions are more informed and influential to me personally after some time with the device. Anyway, thanks for the fantastic content. The Verge is a must watch for any new Apple product release.
