Defrauding investors: $945M lost, who's to blame?

วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี

Elizabeth Holmes is on trial for fraud over her time at Theranos. As the trial begins to wrap up, many questions have surfaced about what enabled Theranos to rise to such heights. Would the alleged crimes have been possible without the tremendous momentum from angel investors?

I’ve always worked with non-profits. Every interaction with large for-profit entities is disgusting. Maybe one out of twenty people actually has any passion for life at all. Everyone else just wants to collect a paycheck for the least amount of work possible. Now non-profits are basically being run into the ground by… social politics. Social issues are important, but every day doesn’t need a new outburst about hurt feelings, a breakdown in the bathroom, or the police being called because someone is telling strangers children to kill police >.

@Ahmad Jamal Mughal The amount of capital invested is calculated. None of them will go bankrupt from losing 100% of their investment in these failing companies. If you invest in 1000 companies and just one happens to become the next Google or Facebook, then you'll recoup everything you've spent on these 1000 companies plus a whole lot more.

@AA BB yeah… Trump’s dad left HIS REAL ESTATE EMPIRE to his children with former President Trump as CEO yet managed by an executive board. Yes, Trump had his own investments, but he leveraged the existing Trump empire to acquire those deals. His remaining siblings also own Trump Enterprises, but Donald used his public image to be the face of it. The fact he doesn’t want his taxes publicized is due to his wealth being locked up in the family trust and his individual wealth is far less hence his shady deals to acquire liquidity without selling stock. When you sell large shares of stocks, it is publicized to shareholders and Wall Street. Trump sliding into politics with his existing shady ways allowed him to gain access to real estate dealings he wants to use post presidency as well as as leverage MEMO 618.

I seldom take the time to comment on YT videos, but the title here is inaccurate… Silicon Valley did not invest in Theranos. Most biotech focused VCs passed on it and that’s why you didn’t see any of them on the board. The 5AM Ventures, Venrock, Orbimed, and NEAs of the investing world saw right through this hence why they didn’t invest. Other than that, good piece!

The big investors aren't hurt when the deal goes sour because it becomes a tax write off. For the smaller investors, on the other hand, who have invested their retirement funds they're screwed. The tax write offs however impact the average joe because there will be less money for public services and infrastructure.

There is something that you forgot to mention. When you want to be classic startup, you have to do something disruptive and you have to convince people, that you are winner even though you actually have nothing more than perfect idea and perfect plan to execute. Thats why Elizabet Holmes was creating this sort of hype. You have to motivate people to having several years of hard-time with you. Sometimes you have great idea, but the hard part is to convince people into believing you, to invest in you and then to convince them you are the only one to execute our own idea. The problem with Elizabeth is that I think she was so driven by her vision that she did everything to fullfill that vision, without actually thinking if the final product WILL work. Sad story is that there are many people who have perfect vision to execute, who did their research and know that the thing they are doing, will succeed and is possible to do. But, unlike Elizabeth Holmes, they are not good enough in storytelling, manipulating people and sales skills.

I find it odd that this is one of the only CEOs to face criminal charges - not because of patients or employees - but because of wealthy investors losing money. When it comes to banks, hedge funds, corrupt politicians, irresponsible tech companies, social media platforms, retail chains mistreating employees, overworked game studios, Amazon, Nestle, Kellogg’s, etc., we as a society can’t be bothered to hold them accountable. But when some billionaires loose some money it’s suddenly very achievable goal to for someone to maybe see the inside of a jail cell.

if investor lose money on a start up, they get it back in tax deduction, because they have many businesses, 1 billion dollar expense/loss in on company is another 1 billion dollar deductible in another company.

How rich they are has nothing to do with whether or not they were injured by losing the money. There was fraud involved. And how much money they already had is not relevant. Because you're young and stupid you would say something like that.

The moral of the story, if you're rich, you don't really need the money, but because you're rich and greedy and have the resources, you can still make people pay for wronging you, though it doesn't really matter, it's more of wanting to show how rich and powerful you are, that fact only means way more than the negligible $ amount the rich lost

No,no….this was an attempt to cast blame on the investors? The clown who said the investors enabled this whole thing, is obviously not familiar with the facts of this case.

Theranos is bad but I still think VC is doing right, they should invest their money to something seems impossible. If a business 100% going to work , they can just get loan from bank. 😹
