Exclusive: Intel's new smart glasses hands-on

Intel's Vaunt smart glasses won't make you look like a Glasshole. Dieter Bohn got an exclusive look at Intel's latest gadget. By shining a low-powered laser into your retina, the glasses can get all sorts of information without pulling out your phone. UPDATE: In April 2018, Intel ceased development on the Vaunt smart glasses project.

Time, date, timer, menu for upcoming meal, reminders. If I am at the craft store, it can show me some projects I can take on so I can immediately find supplies. If I am at the clothing store, it can show me modern fashion fit for my age so I can have an idea what to look for. For Alzheimer person it can show names of people person is looking at ( his friends and family, Doctors, etc).

They're prototypes, but it would be nice if they built ONE designer set just for the reveal just to blow the lid off. We know they can, as long as the temple/earpiece is wide enough to hide/house the hardware, the frame style is irrelevant, so lots of opportunities there.

I really like the idea of having another human on the other end sending any kind of urgent messages. So instead of checking the phone to see what's important or whatever, having someone be able to let me know, in a completely unobtrusive way, that there's something else that needs my attention. It'd be totally cool as a teleprompter too.

I think it would be far better to have these glasses help with difficult things and not everyday easy things as they aim it to be. Like explaining a hard GUI's or help the brain learning new things in accord with it and making the brain better. It should not become a brain walking stick unless somebody really needs it.

I think the problem with Google glasses was that the glasses themselves were not a "normal" accessory that people would wear. In my opinion, it wasn't practical to wear Google glasses (not that I've ever tried - but I feel that's why they didn't stick around). Now with these glasses, it would just be an extension to your digital world - in case you already wear prescription glasses. Nowadays, not everyone has a smartwatch. But the ones that do, find it super convenient to have all their notification on their wrists. With these glasses would be the same thing. Maybe they can also do this in sunglasses to extend to a broader audience?

Intel cancelled this project :( "Intel is continuously working on new technologies and experiences. Not all of these develop into a product we choose to take to market. The Superlight [the codename for Vaunt] project is a great example where Intel developed truly differentiated, consumer augmented reality glasses. We are going to take a disciplined approach as we keep inventing and exploring new technologies, which will sometimes require tough choices when market dynamics don’t support further investment." - Intel

How about a combination of that and a finger worn pressure sensitive ring that has a scrolling feature? You could place the ring at a comfortable place on the finger to custom adjust for the mechanics involved in ergodynamics. For that matter, a mouse could be replaced by a dental retainer where the back and even the front of the teeth become the scrolling bars and type of keyboard activated by tongue adjustments? That could prove useful for disabled people as well.

  • Fernando Estrella

    Fernando Estrella

    3 ปีที่แล้ว

no it isnt, the blind spot is at the nasal part of vision, this one is inferior and temporal, its just not in your 20 degrees of central vision, so the image is blurred out by not having the sharp focus provided by the cones in the fovea.

Brandon Wiebe has nothing to do with the physiologic blind spot. That blind spot results from literally a spot on your retina with no photoreceptors so even if you're projecting to the retina you can't project into your blind spot. Regardless it's very cool.

i see them more as a tool for an engineer or somebody that relies on whats seen to develop their jobs. Not really for facebook or stuff like that, it would be like reinventing the wheel by adding a lot of corners. How about software that can make quick measurements on stuff that the user is looking at? Or maybe translate documents, or make calculations based on what the user wrote down on paper, see the time, identify plants, show up building names, you know stuff that has more to do with the eyes and that people usually try to solve by watching. So it can be more like a body upgrade

@Book Snake Nah, I need glasses my eyesight is awful so it's not just like a accessory to me If I didn't need them it would probably be not worth it but if you're going to wear glasses all the time anyway why not?

It seems over the years there's still interest in wearable displays so I'm sure without a doubt that some time in the future we will all be wearing something other than what we have now. Just like the upgrade from regular phones to smartphones. If that's 1 year, 10 years or 20 years is hard to say but there seems to be a interest in it regardless. If it's a quality of life upgrade, it'll probably go quick.

Tom Cavrot I heard that to but tons of companies are working on these and keeping it quite Apple is apparently working on these, I'll probably by a Android version though since Samsung will release these and im hoping Xiaomi does a budget version

Cool. Much like the smart watch was at its launch. Its only now smart watches are starting to become justifiable to own, but its still alot eaiser/better to just use your phone. So i cant see (pun intended) these being useful until we can get fully HD displays in our eye which then negates the need to whip our phones out. One line of red text? Come on...

Really cool and I wouldn’t mind buying them. Hopefully they aren’t like Apple and will sell them for thousands because no average human would buy glasses for that much unless they are rich or are THmyrs. Selling them for $500 or less is more of the price range for me ($300 or less)
