Hear New York City in 3D audio

วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี

The Verge’s Ryan Manning uses 3Dio’s Free Space microphones to take you on a crazy audio tour through Times Square, New York; a virtual barber shop; and a 360-degree Beck concert. This century-old technology of binaural audio - which hacks your brain to put you in a scene - is about to make a huge comeback with VR.

+CodyMetal, No man... That's just stereo 2.0, wich can achieve some localization of the virtual source but mostly in the front panorama, and the virtual sourc is created 'like' inside your head, meanwhile binaural can track 360º with elevation, and the virtual source is created outside wich creates a sensation of more ASW. So yeah to different technologies, and YOU HAVE NO IDEA

For some reason I really liked the people walking up the stairs. By the way, I'm not into ASMR that much, but just in realistic recordings, maybe music with no post processing, even with some flaws that you can notice, it's so interesting to me. What would you recommend for such music? I want to just close my eyes and totally feel like there is a person next to me, with all popular music it's just like they were in my head, can't describe it but it definitely feels so fake.

very impressive. I have a question. I have never been able to experience the sound like coming from the front with HPs. In the best case it is out of my head, in the worst inside my head. But never i have been able to hear it coming from the front. I have the feeling that is just physically impossible. Am i right ? i think this is the most important issue when listening through HPs. After a while the listening becomes unnatural and so fatiguing, even with very good HPs.

I find binaural audio can be extremely convincing in terms of ambient sounds but somehow it always fails to convince me with sounds coming from the front. In comparison to a well calibrated and quality Dolby Atmos or DTS-X surround setup which certainly is less accurate in terms of ambience (the room you are in changes the sound), the surround setup gives me more convincing and accurate positioning. The fact that it colours the sound a bit isn't all that problematic either as it ties the sound to your room more and this can make you feel more like you are there than cutting out the room completely sometimes. Also no 2 persons ears are the same so unless the sound is recorder with an exact copy of your ears and head it will always be a little inaccurate. Well just my personal impressions with it. Still impressive for headphone use though.

Yeah! I know how it feels, since I do good recordings my self and is used to good sound. I also like a lot of science channels and people who builds awesome stuff. But no one of them have any knowledge (or doesn even care) when it comes to improve their sound. I have also built all my equipment my self with a minimal budget, so I know the technical challange isn't that hard. It makes me mad to see people who can refine their own metals out of road dust, do advanced chemistry, build advanced electronic circuits etc. still put a microphone on their chest too "improve" the sound. For the second - it's not just THmy that gets ruined, once you get used to good sound - every TV-program, movie and commersially recorded music will all sound like crap. Going to a movie theatre makes no sense for the audio (the recordings are so shitty anyway that you can as well watch with your built in TV-speakers and then just add a subwoofer to get a little more bass). As we know - once you get used to something good, it's very hard to go back to something worse. Also - the bad audio in movies is not due to the fact you use speakers. You will need headphones to get the full function out of your artificial ears. But I have played back my recordings wich are done with 2 omnidirectional microphone setup on speakers with good results. The most important is that you need to improve your room acoustics a lot. The room needs to be like a good studio or anechoic chamber. A normal room will make all recordings sound like crap (no matter how good it is). I use to say that try to put a speaker in a box and see how that sounds. A normal room affect the sound the same way - the only differences is that it's much larger compared to the wave length of the sound than the box - so the resonaces will be much lower and because of that we don't percieve it like we are inside a box. But technically it does affect the frequency response the same way (just at a lower pitch) and it ruins the stereo information the same way. You also need to spread the stereo speakers further apart (you have to be practically in between the speakers rather than have them in front of you). The typical stereo triangle is in fact a result of trying to recreate a "scene audio" that isn't there due to bad recordings.

Though this is the closest we are to real hearing, it isn't perfect. There is a stock audio recording of knocking on wood, and it is close to indistinguishable from the real thing. That is because there is a certain, crispness to real life sound, and it makes something like this or the knocking distinguishable. Many people call it the "real-ness" of a sound. Because it is what your ears distinguish from the sound being simulated by headphones, and the sound in real life. If you were to acomplish this, you'd need to get the right headphones, not the right microphone.

  • Avinide

    1. I have both of these headphones, and in-ear EarPods makes me feel more immersed. 2. The difference is huge, because those fake ears reflect sound waves coming to our ears, and also in some cases mutes them a little bit. Our brain will transfer those information, and after that we will know where does the sound come from. In case of normal microphones placed in same way, it might work, because those microphones will register difference in arrival time and loudness between one another. But I don't know how about phase shift, and timbre will probably be unmodified..

I listen to binaural beats because it helps me sleep. Plus, if you listen to them whilst high, and your subconscious focuses on the background beats, you get lost in dreamland because your conscious mind is focused on the music.

I'm sure 3D sound mics for asmr and 3D sound are new, but I hope some higher end mic maker companies actually make things that would make 3D recording in hifi easier. I know you can do some crazy stuff with paning in some daws, but for asmr makers it would be so good in they could higher end mics for that. i mean you could use 2 different mics but setting them up is like twice the work. I think it's also kind of creepy that those just look like ears. At least they work good.

Im fantasising about having VR headset with 3d audio transporting me somewhere else. I think being cool environments like the top of Mt Everest or going back in time to a period simulation like Ancient Rome or something would be awesome ways to use it, things we cant really do in real life. But it sounds expensive and won't exist for a while.. sigh

Great video apart from dismissing all binaural beats , which is based on brainwave entrainment which happens all the time, which is not nonsense it is science . The technology has been around since the 70's and you can find programs like centre point in drug rehab centres and mediation centres all over. They train you to enter mediation, I am only commenting because this therapy has literally saved lives and continues to be a great source for teaching meditation practice for mental health. It is science and quite easy to demonstrate brainwave changes, try centre point your self, meditation has nothing to do with third eye nonsense but everything to do with mental equilibrium. Go try it, you will ether experience mediation or fall asleep. I can mediate with ease thanks to this technology it was a literal life saver, during a very distressing time, it is not a placebo. there have been plenty of Mri study's that back this up' to dismiss the effect of sound on the brain and the efficacy of audio tec in mediation is just pain wrong.. Just don't go by the rubbish on THmy .

Such a creepy thing, walking down the streets with a microphone picking up everybody's talk, then you go home and start listening to it with amplification.

This would require the head thing with two ears on each side, that way, when you listen to it, it can use the closest ears to the degree that you are viewing it from, but I think that would be difficult to do, still. I would like that though, it would be quite cool indeed! :)

Coming from the city of Hong Kong where the knowledge of Hi-Fi is absolutely common place, I am genuinely surprised that the audience of the VERGE, the tech-savy type of all people, need a video to explain to them what Binaural Audio is. I invite you to come to Hong Kong and check out the Hi-Fi and headphone specialty shops here. Even my 60-year-old mom knows what is, and how to, burn-in her new headphones.

5:00 3D audio going to be huge on the next gen consoles. After hearing it in VR I think all games should use 3D audio. You haven't been scared in a video game until you play a VR horror game with 3D audio.

As we are individually tuned to the audio patterns created by our own ear shape, I wonder whether binaural recordings from generic shaped ears will always sound a little foreign to our own 3D experience. Is it kind of like hearing a familiar language in a slightly different accent - it feels familiar, but it doesn't quite feel like home.

I did some research into brainwave entrainment, and a lot of it does seem to be nonsense. But a few types of recordings have actually been shown to be effective in helping people achieve a specific brainwave frequency :) Which can have an impact on mood/excitement/sleepiness.

Not many people know that you don't actually need expensive 3D microphones to create 3D binaural sounds. It is easy to do with software.

OK, so I've known about and loved the technology of binaural recording since I first heard about it in the mid to late 90's I think...and I remember the only thing I could find at the time to buy using it was a sort of self-proclaimed "sex in 3D" CD. And no, it wasn't 5.1 ir was truly bi-naural (it even included the virtual haircut thing you featured). Anyway - just wanted to thank you for the live NYC - I envision a day when we can just walk around our living room and hear surrounding sounds that place us anywhere we want to be (like NYC!) Oh, and btw, you so earned my sub not only for outstanding vid but guaranteed it with the cats eating wet food! You must be a great guy! Keep it up- can't wait to "hear" more! (groan)Oh P.S. Does anyone know if the Beck thing is available online? Also, I think U2 did something similar in NYC subway ...
