Dell XPS 13 Plus: Is that a… touch bar? 👀

วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี

Dell’s new XPS 13 Plus launched today, with a starting price of $1,199. It looks similar to the previous XPS 13 on the outside - but open it up, and you’ll find a new haptic touchpad, a depressed keyboard, and a “capacitive touch function row” that is, according to Dell, totally not a touch bar. There are new processors, better speakers, and an OLED display option. We’ll find out how well this new package works when the device launches worldwide in the spring.

@Ashyyy k The Touch Bar was good for regular users (it provides an easier way to access things like emojis and also serves as media control), but for power users that actually use the function keys (and escape key), it's terrible. Apple should've kept it as a MacBook Air feature instead of putting it on the MacBook Pro, but because it was flashy and fancy, it had to be on the higher-end, more expensive MBP rather than the cheaper, more popular MBA.

I can’t even imagine why they would prototype this, let alone ship it. That capacitive function row has the same problems the touch bar did, but lacks its flexibility, so it is indeed not a touch bar but worse. They key spacing is so narrow that you won’t be able to feel for key edges, making it hard to type blind. The invisible trackpad will be hard to find leading to many misses. And they didn’t fix the stuff people wanted fixed, like the 720p webcam and the lack of inverted T arrows. This is a laptop for people buying purely on looks and not intending to actually use it.

And I would even go as far to say that it doesn’t even really look better than the previous model. I just really wish dell would focus on fixing the issues with the current model (of which there are many) instead of completely redesigning something that didn’t need to be redesigned.

@Blue At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple says "sike" and puts the headphone jack back on the iPhone, leaving its Android competitors looking stupid for removing it in the first place. Apple has been doing some very un-Apple-like things in the last year (bigger thicker MacBook Pro, iPhone self-repair program with parts), especially now that it has an industry-leading consumer laptop (MacBook Air) and one of the top smartphone flagships (the iPhone is now top or competitive in battery, camera, processing power, display, etc.). Even iOS is gradually becoming more open with each iteration while Android closes up with each new version.

Missed opportunity with the function row, they had the opportunity to let you customize the icons on the function row and let you change the icons and control what happens when you press them too! Say I wanted to make a button on the function row that opened file explorer or another button that opened Steam. You could choose from a ton of icons to represent what you program the buttons to. But sadly they didn't do anything like that. With it just simply being basic function row icons, it's harder to "sell" the fact that keyless would be better.

@Phani krishna Narra Luckily the 3-year next-day on-site full-service thing was on sale when I bought mine, and it was definitely worth it 😁 Two mainboards (with a soldered Nvidia GPU) would have been very expensive. But I assume it was that Nvidia GPU, you could literally feel the hot spot. It was known for it's poor power management and one of the technicians told me that he replaced approx one of these motherboards per week - most of them with a dead GPU.

@Sacher Khoudari Phew! Two motherboards in 3 years? And these things happen right after manufacturer’s warranty expires. Luckily my 1340 wasn’t riddled motherboard problems but it had a very very poor thermals. Mine had a core2duo chip inside and it was dumping heat like it was nobody’s business. Unrelated, but after 3 years the backlight gave up. I had to replace the whole top half of the laptop because they didn’t sell the backlight separately. I’d be lying if said that I didn’t think of selling it and getting an XPS Studio 15 with i5 at that time. But, I stuck with it for 3 more years and bought a Lenovo flex 15.

First thoughts looking at this is how useless it would be for any pro user A lot of programs especially with terminal emulators need F1-F12 I already hated having to switch between function keys and hotkeys on most modern laptops. Removing the function keys seemingly entirely makes this laptop useless for anyone that does more than just browse the web

It's not a touch bar though. Dell haven't changed the functionality of the Function Keys. The touch bar removed function keys which people disliked.

I hate the touch bar but I will take it any day over this capacitive touch function row.

Don't really care about the capacative touch stuff, but I am more in awe of the haptic touchpad that seems to span the entire palm area!

It’s all in the implementation. Right now and for a long time in the past, Apple has been regarded as making the best trackpads. It’s the software, as well as glass surface, and with Force Touch, the ability to click anywhere. If Dell wants to do that they need to respect some ergonomic basics such as the fact you can clearly tell where the MacBook trackpad ends and palm rest begins as well as using glass for the trackpad for a smoother feel and to avoid the bald wear spot plastic trackpads get, but leave solid aluminium on the sides.

@Viet-Anh Tran exactly palm rejection is a massive issue, it’s why phones are going backwards from the “future” of phone design which was super curved waterfall screens that are usability nightmare.

  • Viet-Anh Tran

That would be a usability nightmare. Path rejection would have to cover the whole palm area and has to be perfect, so that it doesn't register movement.

I LOVED the XPS 13 line up but considering the changes they're making, this makes the upcoming MacBook Air more enticing and I'm not even a huge Apple fan...

Sorry a couple of questions: How is the screen size ? Does XPS 13 + mean 13.9 inch ? Do they introduce 2k resolution to XPS line ?

Did Dell not learn anything from Apple? Power users and professionals don't want a touch bar. It's a fun gimmick and might seem cool in theory, but in practice it slows down your workflow.

Wait... is the Esc key capacitive too? Big nope. Also, I thought the whole bottom would be one giant track pad, which would have been a bold move, but if the track pad is just "hidden", that's also a big nope.

Correct, it's not a touch bar. At least the "emoji bar" made a lot of kiddies happy. This capacitative bar has only downsides with no benefits. At least Dell could have learned from Apple and given back the esc key FFS.

Replacing the function keys with anything other than function keys is a bad, bad, bad, bad, bad idea. Us Mac users have only just got our function keys back on the new M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pros,. Having owned a Dell XPS 13 in the past (and loved it - even if it was Windows), this capacity touch row would definitely not make me buy it. In fact, Dell's changes have made us change to Lenovo at work because their laptops are just not as good anymore.

Looks cool, given the bad rep for captive touch surfaces on laptops from over a decade ago, I'd have to give this a try first though. Is it just me or does it sound like the mic sounds like its covered, the audio is so "mumbled"?

Just like with better vibration motors in Smartphones, it's so funny how manufacturers now, literally half a decade later, notice that good haptics ARE in fact important and so they now try to copy the Taptic Engine in both Smartphones and Laptops. I personally always hated keyboard that have no real space between each key. It's just bad to type on those - on both hardware and software keyboards. Keyboard just NEED a bit of space between each key...
