The new metaverse gold rush

Tech companies like Meta and Microsoft are betting big on the metaverse. But what exactly is the metaverse? It's more complicated, older, and less inevitable than it sounds.

lmfao, Gretchen stop trying to make Meta happen, it's not going to happen. what business in your right state of mind, do you actually believe would be insane enough to conduct a business interview or meeting like @ 3:01? Knock it off, no serious business is going to be working like that. The fact you're having an interview with a straight face thinking this is going to be a thing, is insane. Nobody is going to work like that, just stop trying to make this seem normal lmfao.. Plus why would I let that billionaire sociopath control any part of my realities? This is a complete billion dollar fail of a business plan. I seriously stopped taking any of this seriously @ 3:01. I can't believe you did that with a straight face. All you did was put a brick screen on your head, and called it, "Virtual realilty" This is such a STUPID concept.

The part where Alex mentioned that Facebook wants to get in on the platform early because they get charged 30% by Apple/Google on current mobile platforms is the most key thing: It's not just that Facebook wants avoid having to pay 30% to another platform holder, they want to be the platform holder charging 30% to everyone else. Not only that but they want that platform to encompass as much as possible. Not just limited to games and apps on your phone but they want to charge a 30% transaction fee on everything happening on games, work, all of your social spaces, just walking down the street, existence itself.

"Facebook wants avoid having to pay 30% to another platform holder, they want to be the platform holder charging 30% to everyone else." This and because you will need their API's for your product to work with their product, then they prevent you from using another store like Apple. It's literal an Us too move, and Mark said it when he brought up their API's and license fees. But they will also be able to tax transactions as Valve does is steam. They want to create a virtual reality composed of virtual realities with interoperability that adds value to items forming an economy that they can then tax like a government. They say they will lighten up on the spying, because they have their eye on a bigger prize.

Facebook doesn’t get its money from these kind of transactions like Apple does, it gets it from data. The more paywall facebook puts, the less customers and the less data.

We have so much still to discover and enjoy in the real world, that this feels so backwards in terms of a product. Why would you want people using technology that companies make, to enjoy a virtual reality? Because people can make money off of the idea. No other reason. The only positive I can see from this, is to give people with some specific disabilities, a place to do what they can’t do on their own.

  • Thezuule

@Evan Williams "the internet is not a product created by a single for-profit company" And neither is VR, AR, or the software that powers both. There's a number of companies involved in the hardware and exponentially more in the software. The metaverse cannot work if it's just one company. You can't have a functional digital economy with only one company anyway. The internet wouldn't work very well with only one website, the metaverse isn't going to work with one content provider.

  • Thezuule

Because the technology is fun, entertaining, and useful. I have a specific disability, I don't own a plane or a 1000 hp sportscar. I can enjoy Microsoft Flight Simulator and Project Cars and all this in VR though.

  • Evan Williams

    Evan Williams

@Spo8 That’s a fair comment, but I don’t think it will be as open and free as FB suggests. They need to make money somehow, and the product will still be people - through advertising and other similar means to what they do now.

  • Spo8

@Evan Williams The metaverse, if it ever happens the way people are imagining it, will certainly not be controlled by a single company. By its very definition, it can't be.

  • Evan Williams

    Evan Williams

@Spo8 No it’s not. The internet is not a product created by a single for-profit company,. I repeat “technologies that companies make”.

  • XerxesTexasToast

"To what extent do you see the Metaverse being a part of your life in the future?" Depends on what you mean by metaverse. If you mean Metaverse as in the one Facebook is building, absolutely never. If you just mean virtual environments in general, I'm already there. My interest in entering virtual worlds, be they VR or more standard video game-style spaces like Second Life, Roblox, or Minecraft, is entirely dependent on the ability to choose between platforms and the companies who run them. I don't want to touch Facebook's Metaverse with a thirty-foot pole. I'd love to interact in a more indie space, or even develop my own with the right resources and knowledge.

The term “metaverse” becoming main stream along side facebooks recent media activity is concerning. It feels as if a natural and predictable evolution of computing is being purposely linked to a company. These ideas are being put out as being new and exciting when really we are just looking at companies trying to own the next inevitable step. The building blocks of the internet used to be to enable people to access and share information between each other but now it seems we are fast moving into it becoming a tool where we fed information by companies.

Are we really gonna let them get away clean with strategically switching the conversation from those massive leaks to this? Yeah, we’re sociopaths, but hey! Look at this!

  • TheMsLourdes

The two problems of the meta-verse concept is that it requires consent and interaction of corporations as well as mass adoption. Second Life had the first two 10-20 years ago, the last point, mass adoption, the killer app of VR if you will, is the interface. and It is entirely wanting still. The back end tech has been built already and it exists, but the interface is the thing that needs to advance. I have no doubt VR will take off as soon as the cost to entry is under a hundred dollars, does not require allegiance to a particularly platform or carrier, and is able to be used with a touch. It needs to be able to interpret data from the brain fairly directly and feed info back as well. That is when you will see VR take over. Before that time, it will be AR, and you have to choose your levels of tradeoffs. But when VR can convince you, you've just eaten a steak, it'll be attached to everyone, for good or ill.

  • Ymi_Yugy

I'm probably overlooking something, but to me it seems that more often than not convenience beats experience. See texting vs calling, immersive MMORPGs vs hyper casual mobile games, smartphones vs notebooks and so on. It feels like pressing the interface into the paradigms of the real world creates unnecessary friction.

  • Momo Chan

    Momo Chan

That's a key engineering design problem people are overlooking for some reason. What is the problem they're solving here? If I've got a work call I'd rather have it on my laptop while I can listen in and participate while cooking, cleaning or doing the laundry or some other actual multitask. If I've got a headset on what makes it more convenient? That I have an avatar that I know isn't really real and even at the best iteration won't be equivalent to actually being in a room. There's people with vision problems that find long exposure painful, theres people that get sick just using VR too. And does this then create a sort of class of users where noe people look down on you if you cant afford a high quality VR headset and attend a meeting just using a video call. It's like recently they had issues with Apple airtags where car thieves tracked people and hijacked them in their driveway. How is it possible that their engineering and design teams not realise that? I was a pitch presentation in 2015 where someone pitched a similar idea to airtags and using them with cars and EVERY engineer in the room saw the flaws in the design snd critiqued it. Has FAANG now become hubs for yes men engineering where they just don't think about basic design principles and ignore public safety

If you take metaverse from the book Snow Crash, it is a place, never a 2D platform. So roblox is a 2D experience on your screen. Another aspect of metaverse from the book is that it is a metaphor which consists of a road as a place you can be and the road connects houses which might be the worlds. So whoever builds the road: The places at that road might be Facebook horizon or Microsoft Mesh or a VR Game Epic built. And as a metaphor it works well. So the metaverse is not one place at that road, but the whole as an interconnected "universe". I like that a lot because it cleans up all those different descriptions. Now, if Roblox would be VR, would it be a metaverse? Technically yes, if there is a "road" and "buildings" owned by different entities. But you can bet, that there will be a lot of different "metaverses" like that. Our definition of what the metaverse is might change in time. What we mean with metaverse might get bigger and more interconnected. There might be more roads than just the one from the original story Snow Crash. And let's hope they are all connected in some way, technically, so that we do not have to log in all the time we change to another "building", as well as how the Avatar looks, the devices we need to use, and so on. I don't want to own a device for all the different metaverses. That would just be as senseless as having different laptops for different websites.

It's too much of a half-step to gain a ton of traction. Once they can create something akin to a holdeck where the user can actually interact with their full senses and it's a complete reproduction of the experience then people will have a reason to use it to experience things they otherwise couldn't. Currently it seems to have all the disadvantages and almost no real concrete advantages over just plain real life.

Linden Labs already did this and still exists for the past 15-20 years now with SecondLife. The problem is, they never had THIS much competition to innovate until now. User content really brought the economy and innovation up to snuff, and now that big well known companies like Facebook are going with a VR environment, we see Woka-Cola, and Wookie shoes, etc getting involved. In Secondlife, user contributions made much of the environment under Lindenlabs' core construct, where LL didnt really upgrade the construct accordingly, or really slow at best. If Meta tries to pull a Microsoft, and control the majority of content, it will flop, and not progress with the will of its users, regardless of how well it promises or delivers on core engine construct innovation. Either way, as an avid user of SecondLife, Im interested to see how and WHO comes up with a mutually symbiotic balance between innovation, and user content.

How does it "disconnect" you from reality? It lets you teleport and be around people even if you are physically alone. If people IRL come into your space like kids, then you see them in VR, so you don't hit them. You can leave the space and see the real world. If you sit at your work desk then are back in and certain keyboards are mapped into VR. You can also do passthrough to see your desk, because VR coffee doesn't do it. You can link your phone in so that is in VR and all 2D internet will work, but with unlimited screens.

"Am I the only one that thinks that the future, specially after covid19, will be more human and less virtual?" - Those who are profiting from covid19 will never let it end and they will push this virtual nonsense as "safe" way to "do" stuff. There are 3 extremely powerful groups of corporations called: big oil, big pharma and big tech, currently situation with pandemic is in interest of big pharma (selling vaccines and drugs) and big tech (having more users since people are denied of real life experiences due to pandemic) and they are using it to squeeze out big oil from the equation + governments are supporting all that since pandemic is giving them ways to exercise more power over peoples lives and stay on power longer.

I used to work in an Airport Hotel. I used to see the conventions and trainings come in, and the small groups of executives that would rent a small room, and some coffee, and have us make copies of the NDAs or the handouts. Zoom can do some of this but you just don't get the presence that you get in a virtual space such as Alt-Space Microsoft's virtual world that I now use an average of an hour a day to hang out with a group of people I have become friends with. VR is 75% of being there while Zoom is only about 50%, and both are way cheaper then actually traveling and being there.

yup. there's one thing that underwhelms me in VR very few things are photorealistic. when i can lose myself in it's realism, i'll check it out. right now the metaverse has the graphics of a free iphone game for children. and not much going on besides that.

Well Dream machines were already a major plot point in Dreamfall games, can highly recommend. It's dystopian but with just a dash of hope. Disclaimer, i may have formerly worked for one of the companies involved in development of the series. I do think ultimately people find ways to navigate these things. They used to say romantic novels rotted the brain, that young women shouldn't be reading, and this was only 100-odd years ago, and now we study some of those same books that were so controversial back then in school. Then they said the same of TV, videogames, computer monitors, Internet, smartphones and being online 24/7 and somehow we have integrated these things and were fine afterwards, could even gain some benefit out of all of these.

@specialtramp you aren't blind and deaf. You can still hear your surroundings and with the new Space Sense feature you can see your dog walk through your play space. You're not 100% disconnected unless you want to be.

  • Michael

@Dan H Not everyone's solution is the same and not everyone is willing to throw themselves in an uncomfortable situation. What worked for you could be traumatizing to someone else. VR not only could but has been a stepping stone in helping some people already. And I think blaming technology for social anxiety in your kids isn't helping them or anyone. Social anxiety has existed long before social media and technology, I'm sure you know that. Allowing your kids to be exposed to technology that could help them overcome their problems isn't a bad thing.

  • Dan H

    Dan H

@Michael I think participating in society in person is the best way to alleviate or avoid social anxiety. It's like flexing a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. I had stage fright playing guitar and singing in a band. I never would of overcame it if I didn't muster the courage and just do it and forget about what I thought the audience thought of me. I have kids with social anxiety. I blame technology and the lack of human interaction. It's the same thing. If you're sheltered from it, then you never develop it.

  • Michael

@Dan H I don't think anxiety is caused by hiding behind avatars at all. Regardless, I have met many people in VR that were very introverted or shy but through VR they were able to more comfortably express themselves and overcame their anxiety. Cause believe or not, in the real world unfortunately physical impressions affect the way people treat you and in VR people can't or at least typically don't treat you negatively when a lot of your physical attributes are unknown.

  • Dan H

    Dan H

@Michael Maybe hiding behind an avatar isn't the best way to overcome anxiety caused by hiding behind avatars.
