If I wanted a MacBook, I'd get a MacBook. If I want a ThinkPad, I do not want a MacBook ThinkPad. Even Apple's latest MacBook added more than just Type C ports on the Pro versions. OEMs need to stop doing this. And this is why I'll be looking at gaming laptops this year because they still include ports/upgradeability that we used to expect from this line. This is pathetic and will not sway those who want a MacBook as they're already invested in Apple's ecosystem.

I have both a T440s and a X270, and that new touchpad is a big step backwards, as it was in the **40 series ! The lack of upgradeability and ports, and the loss of key travel definitely makes me discard them directly as possibilities, even if I really like the AMD internals... It really saddens me that there's no info about GNU/Linux compatibility at launch, being another of the fundamentals of ThinkPad identity... I just hope that the X and T series keep being as awesome as they've been...

Thinkpads have historically been very friendly to Linux so I wouldn't be too worried about that. I've used Linux perfectly fine on a T61p, T410, my all time favorites T430 & T460 and now as of the last couple of months on a T14 with no complaints whatsoever. It's the Ideapads, Lenovo's trashy line of consumer laptops built with the worst components that they can find, that you should be wary of. Yes, you can make Linux run on them but there's always some little thing wrong hiding in the corner that makes the experience frustrating at best. Stay away from Ideapads if you can.

Their yoga line designs look outdated compared to the Dell XPSs, they have focused so much on the sound bar hinge. I used to really like Lenovo, but dell just stole my heart. I'm actually fine with the port selection as I have multiple usb c hubs that i've really gotten used to using at this point. I keep one in my bag and have a few around the home office. I do appreciate the fact that they put one on each side of the laptop for charging. As someone who has bought macbooks exclusively for the last few years, I appreciate that they're going for a haptic touchpad as those are really the future - the diving board mechanism is awful and is long overdue for replacing. I know she said it felt shallow but i'm sure there is a lot of fine tuning to do before these come out in May this year and the fact that you can customize the feel is also encouraging. The biggest downside for me is the soldered RAM - I really wish companies would quit doing that and allow us to upgrade our stuff later on.

Holy cow, that's what I call a new low. I mean, it IS a Z series, so the name probably comes from that short lived multimedia things they tried to do in the mid 2000s. If it's not, don't call it a ThinkPad.

On the one hand I am really excited about these lapstops, because of the CPU and the aspect ratio of the screen. I mean, just the CPU power will be amazing, but also the integrated GPU will be very powerfull, like twice the current vega ones, which are already not bad. So you will have ver VERY powerfull GPU with an integrated grphics solution which is comparable with a high end desktop GPU from just a few years ago. That is really amazing considering the form factor. On tghe other hand the key travel seems to be very low. Most ThinkPad lover would have prefered a little bit of overall thickness of the laptop is you get more keytravel, because the keyboard is one of the main selling points for a ThinkPad. Also they should have included the decicated mouse buttons. They tried to remove them a couple of years ago with the X-Series (x-240 I think it was) and immediately went back to include them in the X-250 because everybody was not OK with the decision not to include them. Also the ports. It is a busseness laptop, ThinkPad users buy them because of the ports. At least one or two type USB-type-A ports, hdmi or diplayport and an rj45 port would have been nice. It will still be a nice laptop, but it will be more competing with the Apple M1 laptops, bevause the new AMD CPu will outperform the M1 and it also is thin and light, also 16:10, also only a few ports...

Now that I'm taking my old self back to school to be a I.T. professional, I had to change my mindset. So just to see how it felt got me a old school T420 Thinkpad... Dam!!! Its freaking amazing it's running a i5, but it's as smooth as ice this keyboard it's like heaven. I'm really enjoying it like a hardcore Black Gundum yelling at me hey we got WORK 2 do❗❗❗❗ I keep wanting to use it...blows me away. The fact that everything is just removable, replaceable and so user friendly remarkable machine. Oh ya by the way down the road lets upgrade the BIOS, throw a i7 processor in it and get that memory up to what 16.. yes this is dope!!! Then to take that amazing concept and remove ports, melt the memory in the mother board and destroy ports just for the sacrifice of being thin... Now thinkpad has definitely taken the blue pill. Sad but true, let's just hope Lenovo doesn't pull the Ghost in The Shell U.S. Movie remake, all looks, no soul , nothing to help me connect to other real things I need........ Hi, I'm Korean and I've been working as a Thinkpad IBM engineer for over 10 years, so let me tell you how I feel about watching this video. In the past, Lenovo's Thinkpad lineup revived the Z61m series, which came out as a titanium model series. I think this Z series heralded the end of the Thinkpad. The seven-row keyboard, magnesium alloy roll cage chassis, and anti-leak keyboard in the form of a square box were the unique identities of the sinkpad, but they all disappeared. In the long run, it just has such a cheap image. I think Lenovo will throw away all the traditional chassis and designs, starting with the Z-series Thinkpad. I'm going to throw everything away, leaving the sinkpad just by its name. After that, I will integrate with the Thinkbook series. Just like Lenovo abandoned Ibm's System X.

Alienating ThinkPad fans by removing everything that makes a ThinkPad great in pursuit of a customer who already has a huge selection of laptops with the same "new features" is probably not a smart move. Instead of being the best at what they do, they are now lost in a sea of lookalikes.

Seems like some of the latest Windows laptops and the latest Macbook Pros have swapped design languages. MBP gets thicker and more ports and ditched the terrible touch bar. Meanwhile the new Dell XPS 13 adds a touch bar inspired function key row. A lot of laptops this year have adopted haptic trackpads, losing useful physical buttons. This Z series is losing all the useful ports in favor of the all USB-C connectivity that was widely criticized when the Macbooks did this. Strange times.

I think we need to have the discussion about if anyone needs a laptop. Before it was the desktop, then desktop laptop, then thin laptops and currently tablets. For professionals they will always use desktop and laptop but for the masses? At the moment it all the mobile phone. Once the foldable screen is workout these will replace desktop/laptop/tablet. Case and point laptop now maybe the dinosaur of desktop in yester years.

As a current owner and regular user of both a Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen7 and X1 Extreme gen2 i am excited about the 16:10 aspect ratio and that's about where I'll stop myself ... The X1 Carbon gen 9 also has a 16:10 display, possible Ryzen chip and all the greatness I've come to expect of my Thinkpads. I really wish Lenovo doesn't replace the X1 series with the Z in the future.

@Saif Osman no X1’s with AMD and never has been. T14s and X13 were closest. It doesn’t look like the z series is here to replace the X1 either. All these choices in the full portfolio are a luxuries we don’t get from other manufacturers in my opinion. Hats of to the thinkpad engineers for keeping the 3 thinkpad core tenets and pushing tech forward to things we have been crying out for anyway.

Hmm, I think I'll take an asus zephyrus g14 or m16 over these. Way more ports, power, still thin, good displays, even though the design stands out because guh, gaming laptop, performance in them(gaming laptops as a whole) is just unbeatable and their getting thinner and more efficient as well. Like we haven't gotten any big chonkster desktop replacements these last few years because now laptops under 1 inch thickness make use of the full potential of laptop cpus and gpus so unless they're putting in desktop components in, there's no need for such thick chassis. And also apple has been pushing for efficiency with their homemade socs with their efficiency and performance cores that even intel decided to take this approach and it seems to be paying off when it comes to laptops with ther 14core 20 thread options. Like holy ramen, 6 performance cores with 12 threads and 8 single threaded efficiency cores? What? That's a big step up coming from 8 core 16 threads.

Cooler among the younger generation? but priced more like the more expensive business series. Most young z-gens I know are lucky to stretch to $1000 for a laptop alone to $1500-$2000. Even I a old fart can't really afford that high price. And a $1000-$1200 is more realistic for me. They would been better off targeting the $800-$1500 range would have been a better fit to intended target. As with questionable portable mobile battery life? less then optimal keyboard & trackpad. And soldered in ram has me questioning if it is indeed worth the $1500-$2000 price range?

They should just call it something else, but not a ThinkPad. Not having things that were staples of ThinkPads for a long time (good keyboard, usable trackpoint, basic upgradability, connectivity etc.) really waters down the brand into yet another generic Laptop line. Though tbh Lenovo has been doing that for at least the last three/four years, so this is just the next logical step.
